i got the lens for my new camera today. woot!
saturday night was bel’s 27th. it was a cocktail party of sorts, and i though people were going to dress up a bit, but i think i dressed up the most, and quite possibly the seediest. which segued well into everyone requesting some dance moves from me. i’m getting used to playing the entertainment/village-idiot at such parties. perhaps i just need to start bringing my own cake to jump out of.
i did make a great new discovery thanks to mark though, in the form of sufjan stevens.
new years has been and gone for another year. all the folk near me have gone every which way, and i just wanted to see some loud explosions, so i met up with a few of the hornsby gang at observatory hill.
although granted i didn’t go last year, i don’t know that i’ll go again nye ‘07. there were so many boozy irish folk, and these extremely annoying twirling microphone things that people were selling to kids that would play “it’s a small world after all” off-key. between the 9pm and the midnight fireworks, tom, josh and i went for a walk down near the rocks. there were a lot a seedy dudes down there. one joyfully poked me on the belly as i was taking a crowd photo.
the train trip home was fun though. and i think other passengers were amused by our conversation.
christmas this year was much of the same. last year i helped out at my church, partly because my family was playing the away game individually for lunch. this year however, we were all playing the home game, so i didn’t spend nearly as much time at church this year.
church was a bit “rock ‘n’ roll”. it was a strange juxtaposition actually, richard our main pastor wasn’t their, so brent, our assistant senior pastor ran the show and he’s more quite and reflective. so he did “bible readings” (a term not normally used in the penty church), and in between each bit, our worship band would get up and beat out a rock ‘n’ roll carol. it was a little amusing. i was a bit weary actually, you can easily offend people at christmas just by playing carols wrong, and i didn’t want people who weren’t going to come to church the other 364 1/4 days to get offended on the one they did. but i don’t think anyone did. i was watching this one guy i hadn’t meet; each new carol they’d start would blare out, and a grin would wipe across his face. very funny.
after that, i bel, rod and i journeyed to king road. my grandparents and my grandma’s sister were there. and they were absolutely nuts. in the space of perhaps an hour grandma called me belinda, belinda got called glenys (grandma’s youngest daughter) and mum got called sandy. i suppose it isn’t that bad for 78.
i was very tired the whole day through. i’d only got to sleep at 3am the night before, bel and i were chatting for ages. so i had to have a kip after lunch.
we the had the presents opening bonanza. i got some great ones. vertigo 2005, napoleon dynamite & 6 bottles of wine. my relatives must think i’m a drunkard. dad opened the 1980 merlot. it was good, but i probably wouldn’t leave a bottle of wine alone that long for the taste. he also opened the old scotch. that was good too.
sandy got the game of simpsons operation. that was a bit of fun. then we all sat down to watch the interpreter. and that was christmas.
